What if you don't get it?

Not receiving the discount does not always mean you were not eligible, and it does not always mean a mistake was made. Work through the checks below in order before concluding anything: most cases are explained by one of the first four items, and only the later items point to help outside the scheme.
Check these first
1. Has your letter simply not arrived yet? Letters arrive between October 2026 and January 2027, so a November wait is normal. Only start chasing in early January if nothing has come.
2. Were you on a qualifying benefit on 23 August 2026? If your benefit started after that date, you do not qualify for this winter however strong your claim is now. You would need to qualify on next winter's qualifying date instead.
3. Is the right name on the bill? If the electricity account is in a third person's name — a landlord, or a relative who does not live with you — the match cannot connect your benefit record to the account. Get the account name corrected for future winters.
4. Does your supplier take part? If your supplier is outside the scheme, no discount can be paid for that winter. Ask your supplier directly.
5. Did your letter ask you to call? If you received a helpline letter and did not call before 26 February 2027, the discount for this winter is lost. There is no late route for a missed helpline deadline, so diary the date if you ever receive such a letter again.
6. Did you move or switch supplier? Tell your new supplier about your letter and ask how the credit will follow you; do not assume it moves automatically.
Other help worth checking
If the discount is genuinely not available to you this winter, check three other things. First, a benefits check: many people miss out on Pension Credit in particular, and claiming a qualifying benefit not only helps in its own right but can qualify you for the discount next winter. Citizens Advice and benefit calculators can run the check free. Second, ask your supplier about Industry Initiatives help — debt advice, energy efficiency advice, and benefit checks are available even to households outside the main rebate. Third, check the separate winter payments: the Winter Fuel Payment, for people over State Pension age, and Cold Weather Payments, paid during very cold weeks to households on certain benefits, have their own rules and are not affected by whether you received the Warm Home Discount.
