Is the Warm Home Discount £150 in cash? No. It is a £150 credit on your electricity bill, applied by your supplier. If you prepay, your supplier tells you how it reaches you, often as a top-up voucher.
Do I need to apply? In England and Wales, no — the main rebate is automatic through data matching. Only if your letter asks you to call the helpline do you need to act. In Scotland's Broader Group, you do need to apply to your supplier.
Which benefits qualify? In England and Wales for winter 2026/27: Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Pension Credit. You or your partner must have been receiving one of them on 23 August 2026.
What is the qualifying date? 23 August 2026 for England and Wales. Eligibility is fixed on that day, even though letters arrive later. Benefits started after that date do not qualify you for this winter.
When do letters arrive? From 22 October 2026 through to January 2027. If your letter asks you to call the helpline, do so before 26 February 2027.
When is the £150 applied? Suppliers apply discounts over the winter, and all discounts for this winter should be applied by the end of March 2027.
Does it cover gas bills? The discount is on your electricity bill, but if you get gas and electricity from the same supplier you may be able to take it on your gas bill instead — ask your supplier.
I use a prepayment meter. How do I get it? Your supplier will tell you how the credit reaches you, often as a voucher to top up. Watch your post, texts, and supplier app, and use a voucher promptly as it may expire.
Does it affect my other benefits? No. Receiving the discount does not reduce Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, or any other benefit, and it does not affect a Winter Fuel Payment or a Cold Weather Payment.
Is it the same as the Winter Fuel Payment? No. The Winter Fuel Payment is a separate DWP payment for people over State Pension age, with its own rules. The Warm Home Discount is a supplier-applied bill rebate for households on means-tested benefits, of any age. Getting one does not stop you getting the other.
Does it cover Northern Ireland? No. The scheme covers England, Wales, and Scotland only. Households in Northern Ireland should look at the Affordable Warmth scheme and other Northern Ireland support.
What if my supplier does not take part? You cannot receive the discount for that winter. Ask your supplier whether it takes part, and consider switching to a participating supplier for future winters.
Someone texted me asking for bank details to claim it. Is that real? No. No genuine letter, call, or text about this scheme asks for bank or card details or charges a fee. Ignore the message, contact your supplier through your usual method, and contact your bank immediately if you already shared details.
Will it run next winter? Yes. The government has confirmed a new five-year scheme period from winter 2026/27 through to 2030/31, so the scheme continues, subject to each winter's qualifying rules.
